The Riverhead Central School District invites experienced, dynamic school professionals to apply for the position of Director of Personnel. There will be a full year mentoring / learning opportunity for a professional looking to advance his/her career as a Human Resources professional in our educationally progressive community of approximately 5,700 students with almost 1,200 employees serving students in grades pre-K through grade 12.

 

Position: Director of Personnel

Start Date: July 1, 2026

Reports to: Interim Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and the Superintendent of Schools

 

Job Summary: The Director of Personnel is responsible for all aspects of personnel administration; administering Board policies; liaison with all legal offices having business with the district, coordinate district practices to be consistent with federal and state law; coordinate district-wide staffing; coordinate state and national data reports.

Qualifications:

  • State Education Department Certification — SDA (School District Administrator) or SDL
  • Minimum of five years' administrative experience, with Central Office level work preferred
  • Ability to effectively manage time and fiscal resources                                                                                               
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Terms of Employment:

  • Central Administration — Cabinet level position
  • 12-month employee
  • Terms and Conditions determined by the Board of Education

Essential Job Functions:

  • Coordinate the district's involvement with student teachers & administrative interns.
  • Maintain records pertaining to the date of employment and the granting of tenure to and/or permanent status for all employees and ensure that appropriate notices are given to employees.
  • Maintain records pertaining to the appropriate step and degree status of all staff members covered by negotiated contracts and ensure that all staff members are being paid at the salary authorized by their contracts.
  • Review all employee records to ensure that all employees hold the proper certification and/or license for the positions they hold.
  • Ensure that an accurate seniority list for all positions is maintained and reviewed annually.
  • Produce and disseminate staffing updates throughout the school year.
  • Ensure that accurate records are kept of the time to which employees are entitled under the FMLA
  • Coordinate the district's extra pay positions.
  • Coordinate the posting and advertisement of all district personnel positions.
  • Attends unemployment and worker's compensation hearings as needed on behalf of the district.
  • Serves as a community liaison for all groups and activities attended.
  • Compile and submit all data required by SED.
  • Any other responsibilities assigned by the Superintendent of Schools.

Supervision:

  • Assist in evaluating the administrative staff.
  • Develops, distributes & maintains the supervisory program calendar for observations & evaluations.
  • Oversees the Frontline/MLP teacher evaluation program, substitute teachers & AESOP.
  • Participate in negotiations and management of all contracts and in the resolution of all disputes arising out of contractual grievances.
  • Participate in the development of the agenda for Board of Education meetings.
  • Assist in the preparation of the annual district budget, especially in the identification of legal and administrative costs that may be incurred in the upcoming school year.

Civil Service:

  • Oversee the district's Civil Service positions.
  • Serve as district liaison with Civil Service on personnel matters.
  • Post all Civil Service positions in accordance with negotiated contracts and the law.
  • Coordinate the advertisement, recruiting efforts and interviews of all district positions.
